{"id":2141,"date":"2010-12-27T14:52:45","date_gmt":"2010-12-27T19:52:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/?p=2141"},"modified":"2010-12-27T14:52:45","modified_gmt":"2010-12-27T19:52:45","slug":"new-years-resolutions-redux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/new-years-resolutions-redux\/","title":{"rendered":"New Year&#8217;s Resolutions Redux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Year Resolutions Redux<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2155\" title=\"bird at feeder 2\" src=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/bird-at-feeder-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/bird-at-feeder-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/bird-at-feeder-2-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/bird-at-feeder-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/bird-at-feeder-2-266x200.jpg 266w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/bird-at-feeder-2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are piles of snow lit by lots of sunlight outside my window.\u00a0 The new squirrel proof bird feeder survived the high winds as did the rest of the feeders and birds are everywhere.\u00a0 It&#8217;s easy to feel positive about life in general.\u00a0 So I thought this would be a good time to review my progress on last year&#8217;s resolutions written for the <a href=\"http:\/\/creativegene.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/carnival-of-genealogy-87th-edition.html\">87th Carnival of Genealogy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Spend less time with my family.\u00a0 How can I get my research done and tell them where they came from if I spend all my spare time hanging around with them?<\/p>\n<p><em> I have had mixed success on this one.\u00a0 N and I have been brutally busy with work that pays the bills.\u00a0 So, less time together, but also less research time for me.\u00a0 The kids don&#8217;t live here anymore, but their lives have had enough turmoil in them this year to require lots of phone time.\u00a0 Yes, I phone.\u00a0 Anyone who reads this blog knows that I can hardly manage, &#8220;Good morning,&#8221; in less than a paragraph.\u00a0 Texting and tweeting can&#8217;t handle it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Write something for the blog twice a month.\u00a0 How hard is it?\u00a0 If you\u2019re me, harder than it should be.\u00a0 The problem is every time I sit down to write something I just have to check one thing or two or twelve and then it\u2019s tomorrow. Must learn to accept lack of knowledge and to practice brevity.\u00a0 Hah, not happening.<\/p>\n<p><em> Not so bad on this one. There is absolutely no progress on the brevity front.\u00a0 I come from a story telling culture and, as I said above, brief doesn&#8217;t work for me.\u00a0 I deeply admire those of you like, but not limited to, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geneamusings.com\/\">Randy Seaver at Genea-musings<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/destinationaustinfamily.blogspot.com\/\">Thomas MacEntee at Destination Austin Family <\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/appledoesntfallfar2.blogspot.com\/\">Apple at Apple&#8217;s Tree,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reflectionsfromthefence.com\/\">Carol at Reflections From the Fence,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/ancestories1.blogspot.com\/\">Miriam Midkiff at Ancestories,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/gretabog.blogspot.com\/\">Greta Koehl at Greta&#8217;s Genealogy Blog<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cluewagon.com\/\">Kerry Scott at Clue Wagon<\/a> , <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.eogn.com\/\">Dick Eastman at Eastman&#8217;s Online Genealogy Newlsetter,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/sherifenley.blogspot.com\/\">Sheri Fenley at the Educated Genealogist<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/westinnewengland.blogspot.com\/\">Bill West at West in New England<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.dearmyrtle.com\/\">Myrtle at Dear Myrtle<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.footnotemaven.com\/\"> Footnote Maven at Footnote Maven<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0 who get something up frequently, even daily, without a blogging partner, but that will never be me. And my synapses still keep wandering off target snapping to a new beat once a minute or so, but I have managed to corral them sufficiently to finish a piece here and there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>2b.\u00a0 Give Pat a break and reliably write something twice a month.<\/p>\n<p><em>I did it; I did it!\u00a0 Except for a month off this summer I have been a reliable blog buddy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Get organized.<\/p>\n<p><em> Hah!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Get organized.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hah hah!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Clean less.\u00a0 After they stop laughing and recover the ability to breathe my friends will tell you that it is actually not possible for me to clean less.\u00a0 It is true that I do not clean, but when I invite people for dinner I do feel the need to make a flat surface available for holding dishes and flatware and such. This means that I declutter and when I start decluttering I can\u2019t stop.\u00a0 Since I am not an organized person (see resolutions 3 and 4) this means everything gets put in some random place never to be seen again.\u00a0 No more cleaning.<\/p>\n<p><em>Actually, I cleaned more.\u00a0 We have decided that we must take small steps toward civilization and that we simply cannot behave like two large packrats.\u00a0 I refuse to be that headline in the local paper, <\/em>Woman Found Crushed Under Useless Piles of Junk<em>, so there has been more cleaning.\u00a0 On the other hand we handled Thanks giving in our usual manner, shoveling everything into our large basement. Now one of us says,&#8221; I can&#8217;t find..&#8221;\u00a0 and the other one says, &#8221; Try the basement.&#8221;\u00a0 Things I planned to send out for Christmas will undoubtedly resurface around Easter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 Tame The Beast. .\u00a0 I have a long list of places to write to, places to call, and websites to investigate.\u00a0 I will do one thing on that list every day, okay, every week.\u00a0 Most importantly nothing goes on the list unless something comes off.\u00a0 The beast may not get shorter, but at least it will stop growing.<\/p>\n<p><em>A few things did come off the list and the return on that investment was enormously rewarding.\u00a0 Unfortunately I was so busy investigating the wonderful things that came in the mail\u00a0 that the list curled up somewhere and took its revenge for being neglected by growing twice as long.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 Accept the piles, love the piles, become one with the piles.\u00a0 Returning once again to the fact that I am not well organized, my office is a mass of piles of paper, books, post-it notes, magazines and lots of other stuff.\u00a0 Some of these piles have enough dust on them to make it seem like tiny ecosystems have developed in their depths.\u00a0 Sometimes late at night the tiny people talk to me.\u00a0 But weird as it seems, I can find things in the piles.\u00a0 It\u2019s when I try to organize that I get into trouble.\u00a0 This year I will embrace the pile system and no cob will be deprived of its web.<\/p>\n<p><em>I have succeeded at this mostly.\u00a0 Since my office is also the guest room there was occasional cleaning to the detriment of being able to find anything.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0 Gain weight.\u00a0 Might as well make one resolution that I will actually keep.<\/p>\n<p><em> I didn&#8217;t, gain weight that is.\u00a0 For reasons having absolutely nothing to do with me my weight has remained stable this year. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0 Be better.\u00a0 Better, nicer, kinder, more patient, more appreciative, more grateful.
