{"id":4040,"date":"2012-02-19T23:19:29","date_gmt":"2012-02-20T04:19:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/?p=4040"},"modified":"2012-02-19T23:19:29","modified_gmt":"2012-02-20T04:19:29","slug":"joseph-alexander-mackey-edward-savage-cole-really","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/joseph-alexander-mackey-edward-savage-cole-really\/","title":{"rendered":"Joseph Alexander Mackey Edward Savage Cole&#8211;Really?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Really.<\/p>\n<p>This is what I found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/\">familysearch.org<\/a> under Irish Births and Baptisms.\u00a0 Joseph Alexander Mackey Edward Savage Cole is the man known to my husband and his siblings as Edwin Savage Cole, their grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>Edwin or Joseph or whoever he is was the last of seven children born to James Cole and Sophia Jameson Cole in Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland.\u00a0 The family emigrated, apparently by teleportation, to Nebraska about three months after Edwin&#8217;s, (let&#8217;s just call him Edwin or even the family will stop reading) birth in February 1873.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4053\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4053\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jamesandsophieblog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4053 \" title=\"jamesandsophieblog\" src=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jamesandsophieblog-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jamesandsophieblog-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jamesandsophieblog-106x150.jpg 106w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jamesandsophieblog-725x1024.jpg 725w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jamesandsophieblog-141x200.jpg 141w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jamesandsophieblog.jpg 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4053\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James Cole and Sophia Jameson Cole<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I have stared at the entry in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/search\/collection\/show#uri=http:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/searchapi\/search\/collection\/1584963\">Ireland Births and Baptisms<\/a> for quite a while and I have almost reached the conclusion that this is a simple transcription error appending the record of Edward Savage Cole to that of Joseph Alexander Mackey.\u00a0 The birth date is February 16, three days after the birth date for Edwin given by other sources.<\/p>\n<p>I was happy with my conclusion until I continued to search through the Irish records on familysearch.\u00a0 It seems that all of James and Sophie&#8217;s children were entered in some bizarre Irish witness protection program at birth.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what I know about Edwin&#8217;s sibs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>John M Cole, the oldest, was born April of 1862.\u00a0 His birth information is listed in any number of places, but not in Irish Births and Baptisms.\u00a0 In spite of the label 1620-1881 on the database, the civil registrations in Ireland didn&#8217;t begin until 1864, two years after John was born.\u00a0 John M had an interesting life as a Seventh Day Adventist missionary and I will probably post about that some day, but I am going to stick with the Irish witness protection plan for this post.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Robert Cole, born&#8211;maybe.\u00a0 The only record I have of Robert is in my mother-in-law&#8217;s notes.\u00a0 She got this information from someone in the Cole family, and since I have never found an error in anything my mother-in-law said or wrote about the family, I believe that there was a Robert, but I have never been able to find out anything about him. I imagine that Robert died when he was a child, but I&#8217;m not entirely sure that he isn&#8217;t just in hiding.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>David Moore Cole, born November 25, 1864.\u00a0 David is in the registry and under the name we have always known him by, so there could be a small hole in the witness protection plan theory, but David was only 29 when he died.\u00a0 The rest of his siblings all lived to 80, maybe because no one knew their real names.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4054\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4054\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cartyblog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4054\" title=\"cartyblog\" src=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cartyblog-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cartyblog-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cartyblog-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cartyblog-134x200.jpg 134w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cartyblog.jpg 652w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4054\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carty Cole<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>James Cathcart Cole is the fourth sibling, known in the family as Carty. He was born May 31, 1866.\u00a0 In Irish Births and Baptisms he is listed as William James Cathcart Cole.\u00a0 Carty continued to confuse matters by generally refusing to use his name in any documentation, calling himself J.C. or C.J., according, perhaps, to his mood of the day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4050\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4050\" style=\"width: 127px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/willcoleblog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4050\" title=\"willcoleblog\" src=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/willcoleblog-127x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"127\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/willcoleblog-127x300.jpg 127w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/willcoleblog-63x150.jpg 63w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/willcoleblog-85x200.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 127px) 100vw, 127px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Will Cole<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Will Cole is the next son.\u00a0 Born on August 27, 1868 and apparently actually named Samuel William Andrew Cole.\u00a0 He generally used the name William A in the census and other official documents.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4051\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4051\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/elizablog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4051\" title=\"elizablog\" src=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/elizablog-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/elizablog-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/elizablog-104x150.jpg 104w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/elizablog-139x200.jpg 139w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/elizablog.jpg 544w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4051\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eliza Jane Cole<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eliza Jane, born on January 23, 1870, was James and Sophie&#8217;s only daughter. She is identified correctly on the birth index.\u00a0 Perhaps, leaning on past experience and coping with five or six children under the age of eight, James and Sophie were simply unprepared for the birth of a girl and could only come up with two simple names, listed in the correct order.\u00a0 Eliza is also an interesting person, working as a Seventh Day Adventist minister most of her life and marrying for the first time at the age of 50.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And finally, in 1873 along came Edwin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4052\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4052\" style=\"width: 130px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/edwincoleblog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4052\" title=\"edwincoleblog\" src=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/edwincoleblog-130x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/edwincoleblog-130x300.jpg 130w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/edwincoleblog-65x150.jpg 65w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/edwincoleblog.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4052\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edwin Cole<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So Edwin is Joseph or Edward, Carty is William, and William is Andrew. Is this a normal Irish naming convention?\u00a0 Did they simplify things for themselves and their children when they arrived in America?\u00a0 Either could be true or there could be any number of other possible explanations.\u00a0 Believe what you like but I&#8217;m sticking with the Irish Infant Witness Protection Program.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Really.
