{"id":6609,"date":"2018-01-27T23:59:00","date_gmt":"2018-01-28T04:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/?p=6609"},"modified":"2018-01-27T09:43:59","modified_gmt":"2018-01-27T14:43:59","slug":"william-eberle-thompson-1835-1940-52-ancestors-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/william-eberle-thompson-1835-1940-52-ancestors-3\/","title":{"rendered":"William Eberle Thompson (1835-1940) &#8211; 52 Ancestors #3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I saw that the third theme for the 52 Ancestors challenge is longevity, I immediately thought of my grandpa Lyle who lived to the day before his 101st birthday.\u00a0 However, before I started to write about him I decided to search my family tree database to see how many people in the tree lived to be 100 years old or more.\u00a0 I discovered that there were 8 names on the list, not all of whom are direct relatives.\u00a0 I was reminded, though, of William E. Thompson who lived to be 104.\u00a0 He is one of the long-lived who is not a relative at all: he married a Justice cousin after his first wife died (a second cousin three times removed), late in his life.\u00a0 Nonetheless, he is an interesting character and I decided to explore his life a little.<\/p>\n<p>There are various pieces of biographical information about William<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-6609-1' id='fnref-6609-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(6609)'>1<\/a><\/sup> including one in a compendium by the Bethel Historical Society commemorating the 200th anniversary of Bethel<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-6609-2' id='fnref-6609-2' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(6609)'>2<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0 William was born in 1835 in the village of Bethel, Ohio to C. William and Sarah Hill Thompson.\u00a0 His father was a physician in Bethel.\u00a0 William E. got involved in the abolitionist movement from a young age and is said to have used his rifle skills to shoot bloodhounds that the slave hunters used.\u00a0 He followed his father into the medical profession and when the Civil War began he quickly volunteered as a physician for the 7th Ohio Infantry.\u00a0\u00a0 He apparently didn\u2019t last long though, becoming so sick that he was ordered first to Columbus and thence home.\u00a0 He seems to have applied for a invalid\u2019s pension in 1901, I\u2019ve seen an image of the index card that shows him but I have not seen his application.<\/p>\n<p>So <a href=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6611 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-113x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-113x300.jpg 113w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-57x150.jpg 57w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-768x2030.jpg 768w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-387x1024.jpg 387w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-100x264.jpg 100w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-200x529.jpg 200w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-300x793.jpg 300w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-450x1189.jpg 450w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-600x1586.jpg 600w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article-900x2379.jpg 900w, https:\/\/genealogygals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thompson-William-E-1938-06-10-news-article.jpg 939w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a>where does longevity apply to him?\u00a0 First, he lived to be almost 105, dying 5 months shy of that birthday in 1940.\u00a0 He also was said to be the oldest practicing physician in the country at the time, taking office calls almost until the last month of his life.\u00a0 In all he practiced as a physician somewhere between 70 and 80 years.\u00a0 He certainly also counts as one of the longest practicing physicians in the U.S. even today.<\/p>\n<p>****************************************************<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='footnotes' id='footnotes-6609'>\n<div class='footnotedivider'><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li id='fn-6609-1'>\u00a0 Williams, Byron.\u00a0 History of Clermont and Brown Counties, Ohio, Vol II Biographical, pp 53-55;\u00a0 Rockey, J.L. and R.J.
